FastMail + 1Password is, hands down, the easiest way to achieve top-notch account security and spam protection while using various online services. Find out more.
What is a Masked Email Address?
You’re probably already familiar with the idea of Email Aliases; having one email address that exists only to forward received emails to another email address. This is very common for role-based email addresses, such as; admin@, info@, reception@, security@, etc, where you want to ability to forward email from a static address to whomever is currently responsible for addressing those emails ([email protected])
Masked Email Addresses use the same idea to protect you from spam. When you need to provide an email address to vendors or online service providers you can use an email address specific to that company to be able to tell when your contact information has been sold, and by what company.
Ways to Manage Masked Email Addresses
While it is possible to have service-specific masked email addresses by simply using Email Aliasing, it quickly becomes unmanageable. Let me explain.
Just to cover life’s ‘essential’ online accounts, you would need to provide Email Aliases for: Cable, TV & Internet providers, Utility providers, Online Banking, Educational Institutions, Cloud storage accounts, Online Calendars & Scheduling services, Streaming services, Gaming services, Social Media accounts, and a seemingly endless amount of E-Commerce platforms.
Since we also want each of these services to use a different, complex password, ideally a long and randomly generated password, you can easily see how this method can, very quickly, become unmanageable.
Managing Masked Email Addresses Using FastMail + 1Password
Thankfully, the FastMail email service we recommend has a solution that integrates with another solution we recommend, the 1Password Password Manager.
By integrating your password manager with an email provider that manages Masked Email Addresses you can not only create masked emails much more easily, you can easily create an entry in your password manager with you randomly generated password, so you can make sure you can easily regain access to the site.
